Sea Angling 2017 is a research study commissioned by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) on behalf of the UK Governments and carried out by Substance.
The UK has an obligation to report on recreational catches of certain species as specified by the EU Data Collection Framework and the EU Council Regulation 1224/2009. The Data Framework was established in 2002 to encourage EU member states to collect sufficient data to allow the state of European stocks to be monitored as accurately as possible by the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas and by the EU Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee of Fisheries. It requires collection of recreational fishery data from all forms of non-commercial fishing from shore and boats.
Sea Angling 2017 is an exciting opportunity for 1,000 sea anglers to access a bespoke Online Catch Diary.
Substance has developed this unique online catch diary tool and personalised dashboard which visualise a range of metrics including – fishing locations, number of fishing trips, number of and species of fish caught and released.
The data collected will be provided to national and local policy makers to make better informed decisions on fisheries management, as well as providing the sea angling community with information to help them develop their own views and policies. Having data which is as accurate as possible about what is caught, released and spent by sea anglers in the UK, enables the sea angling community to demonstrate its impact more effectively.
It’s another example of Substance’s approach to combining expert research with innovative technology to engage with a range of audiences.
